I have learnt to be time efficient, to
always make note of the time spent on each design. If you are getting paid this
makes sure you are charging the right amount for the spent and also lets you
realize how long you’ve actually spent working on design and will keep myself
on track of time.
To manage and prioritize jobs I think about
what is needed to the most, to the least significant job of priority. This can
be done in to a table in my note book as a table, for each job completed has a
shaded square allow me to see at a glance where I am at.
When working with clients I have found that
some know exactly what they want for their design others may not be sure but
can tell you want they would want towards the design, to make it the design
they want with myself creating the design guidelines they have asked for.
Sometimes I may not agree with what the
client has asked for, you can advise them but at the end of the day, they are
the client, give them what they have asked for.
Keeping the client updated through the
design process is important as it ensures they are informed of the design at
each stage and keeps on track of the design as it keeps the feedback flowing
and ensuring they are getting the design they are happy with, this builds the
relationship between client and designer.
I learnt that agencies have weekly meetings
within the company to make sure everyone knows where everybody is up, giving
feedback about the work produced or what they think within the design team.
Working in agency is quite different to
working freelance as working in a agency you work alongside other designers,
you wont create the whole design but will create part of it, contributing
towards the design.
One member of the team will be in charge of
costs, working freelance puts all the on to you, having only yourself to do all
of the work instead of you and a design team to do it.
Assessing and managing time is critical
when working freelance because of only being your self to do the work.
Working in agency means there is some one
specifically there to negotiate budget and payment of the job however this is
down to yourself to deal with and being only yourself you have be blunt and
push payments from clients otherwise they may let it through the net with you
not getting paid as well as working to tight budget restrictions and having the
to skills to work the budget and sell the design-this making you to think
cleverly and creatively.
I now try to do a job at a quick as
possible pace to get the job out of the way so it allows me to move on to the
job.
